The premier classical music hall on Kulangsu, China’s premier classical music island, the Gulangyu Concert Hall is proof that the best things in life are free. The diverse classical and traditional Chinese concerts held here on many nights of the week—from visiting symphony orchestras to traditional Chinese music to world-class visiting soloists—are all offered to the public without charge, gifts from the island to its local residents and visitors. If you have the chance to catch a Jing & Students concert (featuring famous violist Jing Yang performing with her top students, ranging in age from 5 to 20), don’t miss it.

The Gulangyu Concert Hall is most beautiful as seen from within its sleek, modern 600-seat interior, where views and acoustics are great from all seats and the long strips of slatted wood glow with a reddish hue. The concert hall was built in 1987 and renovated in 2002. Another major renovation will take place in September 2017.

Free nightly concerts (usually taking place around 7:30pm), most of them acoustic, will restart in October 2017. The program will range from visiting symphony orchestras to traditional Chinese music to Jing & Students (with famed local violist Jing Yang and a rotating ensemble of her top violin and viola students, ranging in age from 5 to 20, plus a few other surprises). You can check the schedule on the billboard to the left of the largest stairway leading up to the concert hall.

After the September renovation, the concert hall will reopen in October 2017 with a re-designed lobby and newly revamped concert program that is still to be announced.
