First, I need to let you know: the video is in Chinese. So, unless you are studying Chinese or already proficient in it, the reason to watch the video isn’t for the words but rather, the reason to watch it is for the imagery and the stories you can deduce from the imagery. And it’s great.
The video begins with the early modern sailboats, Columbus-style, sailing to “discover” Kulangsyu and then documents the colonial immigration from the West.
But the best part is that, throughout the video, you see video footage of Kulangsu (Gulangyu) and its remaining colonial architecture. One of the reasons why Kulangsu (Gulangyu) is so beloved is because of its beautiful, classic, western-style architecture. And if you haven’t yet made it to Kulangsu in person, this video is a great introduction to its beloved and famous architectural style.
